Sacred Theatre - the
		   Book of the Lady

In the summer of 1999, in Ireland, an inner voice awoke within me the desire to begin compiling a Goddess Bible for “our daughters’ sakes.” Since that time many Sacred Theatre Workshops have been devoted to that assignment. They will continue to touch upon this project for many years to come.

In the course of that time many of us have looked at other scriptural writing from other traditions. I felt particularly heartened to remember that the Buddhists took several hundred years to begin the process of writing down the teaching of the Buddha.

Alas, those of us interested in, and devoted to, aspects of the Divine Feminine have few if any easily remembered oral traditions of the teachings about Herself or her representatives in human form. Happily, we have a rich mythology about the Goddess and her multitudinous forms; we have cultural understandings from the wise people of the world who have never split themselves off from Her presence, celebrating her as Nature, or the Earth, or the Moon, or many of the other beautiful remembrances of her power. All these are rich sources for telling her more familiar story. But what does she have to say today to modern women and their daughters? Men, too, of course. What does she want; how does she appear? What is her role in human life, in planetary life, now in this moment?

The intuitive word that keeps coming is that she is present in women’s lives, as we live them. We express the facets of Her Divinity and Her Presence. Our work is to seek her, discover her, invite her, celebrate her and know her to be unfailingly present and cherishing in every season of our lives. And to embody and live that truth for our daughters’ sakes – and sons, husbands, brothers, lovers, too.

Since the year 2000, Sacred Theatre participants have meditated, studied, pondered, and then created hymns, laments, prayers, praise songs, stories about The Lady, as well as artwork and designs. Some of these writings are available in a small collection, The Lady‘s Book of Days.

Recently, while once again wondering how to do the seemingly impossible task of configuring this endeavor in a way that might begin to come into form within a reasonable human lifetime, the following pattern, and working title, were offered:

Nine Seasons, Stages of a Woman’s Life:
a Goddess Bible.

• Origins
• Growing with The Lady
• Embracing the Feminine Power
• Loving and Living
• The Partnership Journey
• Care for the Generations
• The Way of the Virgin
• Fully Ourselves, Fully the Goddess
• The Giveaway

After some time of playing with these seasons and considering them as titles of books in a collection of sacred writing, they have been simplified as follows.

Stage's of a woman's life

Intentions for 2007:
• Complete the first compilation of the Book of Origins, including creation stories, pre-birth and birth stories, accounts from many cultures about our earth’s origins, plus stories, accounts, remembrances of the presence of The Lady as guide and companion during the whole process of coming to life on earth.
• Complete the Book of Nurture, which covers the ages of 1 to 10, with special teaching stories for young children, as well as rituals of blessing and celebrations of childhood, especially being a girl child.
• Create a website where existing art and writings may be shown, new ones added, and offerings from other contributors seen and honored.

These are the rules about any contributions to the Bible, “It will never be finished, or complete; it is an open-ended book. It will never be the foundation for a religion, or create any reason for one person to hate another. It should be written from the point of view of The Lady, which means it cannot be anti-male, must include stories of the Feminine God in relation to the masculine God, as well as those where she seems to work alone. Every person and being carries a part of Her story. No one who wants to be included can be left out.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO
THE BOOK OF THE LADY:

You are invited to submit your own writings for The Book of the Lady, sending them in Word documents to gaylefrye@mindspring.com. Sacred Theatre workshops will devote a portion of each session to this writing, so we encourage you to participate in the workshops near you.

Here is a recent offering, written in response to the question, “What can you believe about The Lady?”

Credo
I look into my heart and ask:
“What do I believe about the Feminine Divine?
My heart quivers and my eyes fill as I find no answers.

So what do I believe about any Divine Being?
Only that something has kept me alive, watched over me, kept me from grievous harm all these years
something informed my decisions, guided my steps, showed me the way
something lifted my heart in delight and love, thrilled me to the core, touched me with compassion both soft and fierce
something inspires me to create acts of kindness and beauty
something attracts the right people to me – right for them, right for me
something allows me to find solace in times of deep despair
something has pulled me from the brink again and again.

Is that something the Divine Feminine?
Is that something God?
Where do I find her/him/it/them?
What do they look like? Where did they come from?
Do they exist except in my heart? My mind?

How do I want Her to be?
As real as the skin on my feet, the hair on my head. As close as the blood flowing in my veins. More than that. I want her to be a form I can see and touch, and with a voice I can hear.
